Despite having narrowly escaped death’s clutches, Christopher Barlow is grateful for nothing. His capacity to love has been crushed. He hates everyone and everything, completely unable to see past the gray stain of misery that coats his perception of the world. It’s only after he involuntarily joins a band of depressed misfits who are struggling to overcome their own problems, does Christopher start to re-evaluate his lot in life.

What could they possibly learn from one another? How could they possibly help each other to heal? And the question that Christopher asks himself over and over again… can he learn to love again?

He’s about to find out as he embarks upon a cross country trip with a beautiful woman who is going blind, a boy with terminal cancer, and an abuse victim who can’t decide whether she wants to live or die.

Four people with nothing in common but their destination. They will encounter adventure, thrills, loss and love. And within their travels they will learn the greatest lesson of all.

The hard truth about sunshine…

Warning: This book deals with some tough issues including suicide and sexual abuse.

TRIGGER WARNING *****I will point out that there are open and frank discussions about suicide, about sexual abuse, and about death.  If any of these are triggers for you please take the time to think about if you can handle this before going in.  *****

I went into this one completely blind, it's Sawyer's book so yes, I will gladly take it.  I hadn't read one of her books in a while and seeing this one ( a non series book) made me happy.  Then I started reading it, the epigraph was so vague and made me want to know just what she was talking about.   I knew I loved this story when I was reading the first chapter and Christopher made the comment about the feeling in his chest, asking himself if that was hope, and stating it better not be.  His humour and his sarcastic and sometimes caustic voice made this a great read.

I dived into this book and I absolutely loved it, especially as the story progressed and we learned more from each character.  Told from the perspective of the male character, as he opens up and learns more about the members of the group so too do we learn more about the characters.  His obsession with one of the members made me laugh and his inner monologue was so good and really felt like the thoughts of a guy his age.

Christopher was an angry man, a very disillusioned military vet who had joined up to escape working in the coal mines of West Virginia, it was his family's legacy and he didn't want it for himself.  Joining the military was his way to escape and he was almost home when a small error in driving changed everything for him.  Reading that scene when he relived it made me ill.  Sawyer sure can write the hell out of scene.  Christopher is struggling with his new identity, he's no longer a military man, no longer a man with a girlfriend waiting for him and he had no one who could understand his life.  This accident stripped him of everything he knew, changed his body, amde me wonder how his life would have been different if he could change some moments.  He was angry at the world for having survived his accident and angry at the world for taking even more from him as he 'healed'.

I loved the perspective of reading from a military veteran.  I cried reading this book. I didn't expect that, I went in thinking this was going to be a fluffy new adult read and got so much more. I want to tell you so much more but don't want to spoil it for you.  The fun is in the discovery of each character and their issues, from Dead Kid to Goth Chick, to Sunshine.  Learning about each character and their reason for being at the group was so heartbreaking at times.

The adventure though was so good. I loved that this was a first a way for Dead Kid to get his bucket list checked off and as it went along everyone got at least one item checked off.  I really connected to Sunshine, not at first because I really couldn't believe she was really that okay with her diagnosis, hell I've had mine for years and every time there is a change at the doctors I once again go through the stages of grief.  I kept telling the book that like "whatever girl,  you ain't the Dali Lama, you're holding it all in", and then something happens that makes her really face it and I was so happy the way Sawyer handled that scene and the emotions of it.

I also loved the way the romance in this one developed at first I was wondering if it was going to be Christopher and another character; because he was such an asshat to everyone I couldn't really see him and the love interest at first.  Then I realized it made perfect sense since she saw him for more than he was willing to see in himself; she challenged him and that made him come out of his shell even more.  Her push back, and the others in the group talking to him & treating him not like a broken man but like another of their group really pushed his boundaries and made him start to look at things differently.

Now I have said this before I work in health care ( I don't like saying my position because then if anything happens people might try to say hey I read it on her blog and she's a ... nope not looking for trouble there).  This is my field and normally books that delve into my field have two reactions, I'm either raging at the books because of all the errors and putting it down because it's so wrong, i.e  The chance by Nicholas sparks (I HATED THAT BOOK UGHH). Or it's a research book so it gets it right..Lolol no sometimes authors get it right by swerving on sharing too many details  which I highly appreciate.  This was perfect blend of sharing some medical information but staying far away from too much information or incorrect information.   However I found with this one had me so engrossed in the story that I only thought about the medical information once I put the book down.  I would thing about my own reactions to my diagnosis and wonder why Sunshine was so calm, I would think about what I know about Dead Kid's diagnosis and what I know should have been done for Goth Girl only after I was away from the book and thinking about it.  This made me love the book even more because normally my real life makes reading a bit tough, because my cynicism and knowledge will cut in and say "nope you know that's not how it works " and that kills the vibe of the book for me.

I really enjoyed how the book was written, going back and forth between current events and events that lead up to each moment.  This book took me on a bit of an emotional roller coaster, understanding his anger, seeing his despair; reading the shame and rage the other character has, the fears they all have.  It makes me wonder how many of the vets struggling with PTSD really don't want our thanks, they don't want to be seen as heroes, they're just men & women struggling to bring all of themselves back from wherever they served.

I'm glad I got to read this, I didn't want to put it down, I was reading it on three different devices, my ipad at home, my kindle for traveling and my cell for when I had brief moments alone at work.  I loved this and I really can't wait for others to read it and love it as well.

Definitely a good read, I highly recommend it.

Stacking The Shelves () My First Trip to Ollie's

Stacking The Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks! If you want to find out more about Stacking The Shelves, please visit the official launch page!

I finally went to Ollie's in my state, it opened up last year and having watched so many videos by Jen over at Today In Jen's Library.  I haven't ever been to one and finally was going to be near the town it's in so I picked up the following:

Second Chance Boyfriend by Monica Murphy.  This is my second time trying to get a physical copy. I read this a few years ago and loved it, it's one of my favorite books by Monica and I needed it on my shelves.

Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac  which is about Navajo Servicemen in the Marines during WII.  I have always been fascinated by the Navajo tribe as it was one of the tribes I had focused on it in college.

So Much Closer by Suzanne Colasanti  I picked this one up because it's Suzanne and because it was 0.49c yes you read that right it was forty nine cents.

Shadow Woman by Linda Howard  I read this several years ago when it was coming out and I loved Linda.

Rise by Daniel Rodriguez  I heard about this book from a few military wives that are my friends.  We like to exchange books every now and then & this one came across the suggestion list. I can't wait to read it.

And that's it, that was my first trip to Ollie's.  Other than the book section I wasn't really impressed.  The store was a mid western version of Big Lots/ Odd Job, and we have plenty of those here in the Northeast.  I will travel up once in a while to check out their book section though because that was epic.

Let me know if you have every been to an Ollie's, share in the comments down below what you've gotten and we can chat about it.

Thanks so much for stopping by

Book #Review: Megan's Mark (Breeds 7) by Lora Leigh

Book Title: Megan's Mark (Breeds Book 7)
Author:  Lora Leigh |WebsiteFacebook|
Publisher: Berkley
Genre: Erotic Paranormal romance
Series/Standalone:  Series
Format: ebook, mass market
Cost: $7.99
Pages: 295
How I got it: Purchased from Thriftbooks
Purchase: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Audio Version
Publication Date: May 2006

Synopsis:
In the first book of her erotic new series, Lora Leigh invites you to an intriguing world where genetically altered Breeds and the humans who created them commingle—and sometimes cross the boundaries of desire…Cursed with the extraordinary power to feel other peoples’ emotions, Megan Fields has tucked herself away in a remote corner of New Mexico, working as a small-town sheriff’s deputy. She finds solace in the silence and heat of the desert. But when Breeds begin dying on her watch, Megan realizes that the secrets from her past can’t stay buried forever. Someone is out for blood—her blood.

An arrogant Feline Breed, Braden Arness broods with feral intensity. His mission to solve the mysterious murders brings him to Megan, a woman who accosts his senses like no other. Only with him can she let down her guard—and surrender to the insatiable hunger that wracks her body. But as they team up to hunt the elusive killers, Braden and Megan find themselves becoming the prey…
This story was fast paced, a very quick read, & had good character development with good pacing, which allowed the mystery to unfold well.  Megan is one of my new favorite characters from the series.   I love how much she gave and how much she pushed despite her fears.

An empath who is not blocked or protected is very vulnerable and yet she pushed to become her dream job.  She tried to make her dreams reality and when she realized her dream came at a price she alone wouldn't pay, then she made the sacrifice to back off.  I loved how adventurous she as and who she wouldn't be coddled by her family, friends, her mate and certainly not by Jonas, no matter how much they tried

*Sidebar*  I can't wait to read the story of Jonas's mating, because that woman is going to have to be one hell of a badass.  I can't wait for him to be the one floundering and not sure, it's going to be awesome.

I loved Megan's partner and mate because he was just as wild, just as adventurous as she was. They were a great pairing.  I loved that he pushed her boundaries and made her face her fears while doing his best to protect her as well.

We didn't get much from Braden about his time in the labs but what we do know is terrible and he refused to let it break him and hold him back.  He's a great character to read, as he knows he wants his mate even before the power of the  mating is revealed.  I loved how he wanted to learn more about her fears, how he was willing to go wherever she needed to help her understand her gift and yet he didn't let her hide behind her fear or failures.  Braden was funny, and quick witted and his desire to banter with her made the story flow pretty quickly.

How sad these tales because they paint science so badly and yet mother nature still kicked up a fuss and played a bigger role than even the scientist could anticipate.  The sad part of all of this is knowing there are areas within our world where people are being experimented on especially where the growing needs of the black organ market.  It makers you wonder at the kind of people who would work in these labs.  Just so depraved.

I can't wait to see more from this couple as they grow and begin to influence more of the breeds around them.  I'm sure Megan's only going to get more powerful now that she and her mate are together.

Synopsis:
SHE'S HAVING WHOSE BABY?

Radio celebrity Tabitha Talbot never dreamed she'd find herself dumped…and pregnant! And now, to make matters worse, her station manager has come up with the perfect way to help her mend her broken heart—a love-letter contest. But the only lover Tabitha's crazy hormones are pointing to is her sexy cohost, confirmed bachelor Sam Stevens. And he's definitely not daddy material. Or is he…?

Sam Stevens can't quite believe it himself. One minute he's teasing Tabitha on the air, the next he's got her up against the wall, making mad passionate love to her. What's even more surprising is the fact that he wants to keep her there, for good. Only, Tabitha isn't buying his "let's be a family" act. Lucky for Sam, he knows of one sure way to convince her….
Would you believe that I have had this book on my shelf since it came out??Yes since it came out my loves and I'm only just now reading it.  It's been over a decade; I got this when I was just finishing up my first college degree and holy cow. this has been sitting on my shelf gathering dust.  When I made my new years resolution to read more of my books I had this and 4 other books that I have had since high school and college on my mind and it's crucial now that I read them; this is embarrassing.

Anyway onto the review.  This is a romance with a female character who is repressed because she had to grow up fast when she was a child to help take care of her sibling and herself due to her mother being an immature woman.  Her father split when she was young and she vowed she would only deal with stable men, because you know it's not like some people are single because of life it's because they choose bad partners. (sarcasm)   This was the first thing that bothered me about her, hell it bothered her friends and family.   And they would call her on it too, but she's too stubborn to hear them.

She's had a life plan and she's following it, because she doesn't want to end up like her mother but when her 'stable' boyfriend that comes from money finds out she's pregnant he splits and she's right where she said she would never be.  *so much for that plan*  The whole time she was dating she had a crush on Sam but she takes his on air personality to heart and decided he's not the guy she needs. I felt she didn't look beyond the surface at him at all.  She never gave him a chance to be more than the on air jockey and I loved how he would use that against her several times to let her know she's a bit self centered and things she knows it all.   When we find out Sam's back story we realize they both has similar circumstances and his reaction was to never settle down because he no longer wanted responsibilities.

The story had it's moments like when she started to learn to let go, and she would have fun with Sam.  She had good friendships with her sister, but her friend Jaz went past the boundaries sometimes and she never set her straight.  I loved the miscommunication that led her to fall in like with a letter writer;  funny how she was willing to accept that part of the man but never expect it to come from who it really was .  I loved how Sam loved her, he's way better than she deserves in my opinion.  He knew her way better than she knew him.  He knew she was more complex than her personality was shown on their show;  he knew her favorite things and he went out of his way to make her feel at ease.

Their romantic moments were sweet and Sam's desperate plan on her date night was hilarious.  I enjoyed the story mostly because of him.  Tabitha sometimes just didn't do it for me and I happen to love that name so it was a bummer.  I know her past made her a little cautious but she would make comments in her head at times that made me give her the side eye.  Yes her mother sucked, but her immaturity in dealing with her own pregnancy and acting as if it wasn't real, her stupid plans and her ideas about relationships weren't fully formed or mature.  Considering she was all about plans she should have had back up and contingency plans and to act as if she was better than those other women really made me sneer.  I get she was scared and didn't want to deal with it, it wasn't in her plan but anybody who is in a serious relationship should know that no matter the 'baby proofing' you've done NOTHING IS A HUNDRED PERCENT.

It's still a cute story, I would have liked it better if she wasn't so hell bent on being right all the time and a whole lot judgmental.  It was funny when Sam turned that one her by making his point on air and their audience called and let her have it.
 ★★★
If you're in the mood for a romance centered around music and the morning DJs definitely check this out.  Just know Tabitha takes a while to get used to.  And of course,
Happy Reading my loves,

Synopsis:
One cowboy.
One cowgirl.
One ranch.
Who will win the Double Deuce by the Fourth of July?

Adele O'Donnell knew that Double Deuce Ranch had to be hers the second she walked onto the property. Freshly divorced, she sees it as the perfect spot for her and the kids to start a new life. Remington Luckadeau was always a carefree playboy...until his suddenly orphaned nephews became his responsibility. The Double Deuce Ranch would be the perfect place to raise two boys. But some fiery woman is fighting him for it, and Remington is not sharing-no matter how the sparks fly when he and Adele are together.
This story brings together a few of the other series that Carolyn writes, taking family members and bringing them together for this story, while making the towns all a part of the same world. I loved this story, I think the kids made this story, they had such strong personalities that I can't wait to see if she writes them love stories as well.

I went into this not knowing the premise or anything really, it's how I love reading my books and I just fell in love with the town, the families, the children and eventually the couple.  Given the opportunity to own a piece of land matters to both the parents for different reasons and they have over a month to figure out who is going to win this bet.  I loved how they worked separately and had strong spirits of competition, neither was going to let the other get their ranch.

Separately they each brought their own expertise to the ranch and each of their children has their own reason for loving the ranch.  This romance was so down to earth, the way the couple was so simple and normal.  Sometimes in romance you can forget that it isn't about the glamour but the everyday journey towards being better than you were yesterday that really makes a romance.  I love that Carolyn writes these stories, everyday families with good strong beliefs as their backbone working towards their common goals.  They aren't dirt poor but they aren't the Gates either and that's ok, they still get it done, they still build, create, work and enjoy life.

Remy & Adele learning to work together even though they were competing was fun to read. Adele could easily fit into my family, a strong capable woman who is trying make sure her children don't pay for her mistakes.  She's hell bent on making a home for her girls and making them strong women so they don't ever feel like they aren't everything to her, and yet she's trying to navigate getting past her one mistake of trying to change to fit someone else's idea of who she should have been.

Her choices aren't easy and yet she makes them with the respect to her girls wishes.  I loved that she put her children first and that she loved them so fiercely.  I loved her and Remy coming together, it was sweet romantic and all kinds of cute the way they floundered around trying to move from competitors to friends and to a couple.

Remy grew up fast when his life changed and he got the boys, still close with his family he knew he had to strike out on his own to help the boys adjust and I loved that he wanted a home for them as well.  He came to the realization that he wanted more first and yet he followed Adele's lead and let her set the tone and I loved him for that.

A sweet romance that allowed us to revisit favorite characters, while setting up more for the future and I can't wait to see how the kids turn out in the future.  The girls at least will be a spitfires.
 ★★★1/2
I hope you enjoy this cowboy romance my loves and as always
Happy Reading

My Favorite New Adult Authors & Titles

Hi my loves, welcome to march and my New Adult features this month. I'm hoping to share the good the bad and the worse of new adult and share why I love it and sometimes why I hate it.  I'm sharing my old school favorites and new found loves, from romance to the paranormal and of course the erotic, so let's go for a jaunt in between the stacks.

First up on this list has got to be Jay Crownover, I fell in love with her and her writing about three years ago when I busted a slump by reading Rule and the rest of the Marked Men, but my absolute favorite from her that I highly recommend to lovers of new adult has to be Rome. This Marked man and his lady have an amazing story and I fell in love with and almost cried with and for them. I absolutely loved this story and whenever I need a little pick me up I like to skim through to my favorite parts and read this one pretty quickly.

I also can't leave without mentioning my favorite bad boy by Jay, and the newest addition to the Saints of Denver crew, because OMG he is beautiful.  I really loved this story and gushed about it already in a full review, but you definitely need to check out Church's story if you are looking for good romance for new adult  and it's interracial as well.

Another favorite author of mine is Erin McCarthy and her True Believers series, my absolute favorite however has to be Sweet. Because omgawd (you're going to read that alot) I absolutely love Riley.  He is such an amazing character and the way he loves him some Jess?!!! Just so awesome and another of my slump busters.

This list wouldn't be anywhere near complete if I didn't feature Tammara Webber here.  One of the first new adult authors I read I immediately fell in love with her writing and I haven't been able to stop loving her characters and their stories ever since. Her stories definitely hit close to your heart and make you think.

Another of my favorites is Monica Murphy. Much like Easy, her books Second Chance Boyfriend and One Week Girlfriend were part of my first journey into new adult and it's a rabbit hole I hope to never climb out of thanks to the good writing from these authors.

I read her Once Pure as a review book, then proceeded to purchased the entire series and read it all within a week, Cecy Robson writes a wonderful series featuring some amazing men stronger women, each story building on the last creating a world and community that sometimes fails, but always comes back to have your back. And of course it makes Philly seem so much realer, especially after I visited last year.

Last year I fell not the awesome world of The Reed by Tammy Faulkner brothers.  The first book was recommended by Jen's Library on Booktube.  I was in a slump and pulled this up and it was amazing. I read the entire series in a little over two weeks and I just can't imagine not having this awesome series.  The Reed Brothers are amazing and you definitely need to add them to your reading pile. Especially because we have several characters with different disabilities.

And one of my absolute favorite new adult reads happens to be Raine by J.C Valentine. I gush about this book all the time. It was such an amazing read for me and each time I have re-read it has only grown on me more.

And a few more honorable mentions include Chelsea Fine, whose seres I absolutely enjoyed reading because the characters were well written and so much fun.  I loved how the characters weren't what you truly expected based on their original first glance.

Another honorable mention would be Elle Kennedy's Off Campus series which I really enjoyed reading and loved the final book in the series.

I'm sure there are plenty more I could mention, but whenever I think of new adult and want to read something to bring me out of the slump these are some of my go to authors.

Do you have some suggestions?? Share in the comments down below and we can share and compare.
Thanks for stopping by and for commenting, happy reading my loves

Book #Review: Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover .@colleenhoover

Book Title: Ugly Love
Author:  Colleen Hoover |WebsiteTwitterFacebook|
Publisher:  Atria Books
Genre: New Adult Romance
Series/Standalone: Standalone
Format: Trade paperback
Cost: $15.00
Pages: 324
How I got it: Purchased
Purchase: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Publisher
Publication Date: August 2014
Add To Goodreads
Synopsis:
hen Tate Collins meets airline pilot Miles Archer, she knows it isn’t love at first sight. They wouldn’t even go so far as to consider themselves friends. The only thing Tate and Miles have in common is an undeniable mutual attraction. Once their desires are out in the open, they realize they have the perfect set-up. He doesn’t want love, she doesn’t have time for love, so that just leaves the sex. Their arrangement could be surprisingly seamless, as long as Tate can stick to the only two rules Miles has for her.

Never ask about the past.
Don’t expect a future.

They think they can handle it, but realize almost immediately they can’t handle it at all.

Hearts get infiltrated.
Promises get broken.
Rules get shattered.
Love gets ugly.
I said I wasn't going to cry. Then I get to the last few chapters and I can't stop the first few tears then before you know it, tears are rolling down my face and Colleen has won.  Yeah I loved this story and it was so good.

I went into this story completely unspoiled (which is a miracle in itself, considering how popular this books was).  I also went into it not knowng what it was about, just it's new adult and I wanted to read it and I'm so glad I went into it this way.  It's funny like within the first few chapters I was laughing and I was like I might enjoy this book.  There were corny moments within that the characters recognized and it just made me love it even more.

Told in dual perspectives we learn the back story of one character while the other shares the current events of their lives and how they intersect.  It's not until the end that the second character catches up to the present and it totally works with how the story is written.  I loved it so much because the character was living in the past so much they couldn't enjoy the present which is why we never got their POV.

I loved that Tate is a nurse and that Miles is a pilot. I loved how they were able to be strong in the own little worlds and yet be so weak when it came to each other.  I loved she was working on her masters while Miles was working his way up the ladder of being a pilot.  They were so funny together and still so good when apart that you couldn't help but see why one saw things so differently from the other.

I loved the way in which Colleen choose to share this story and how it's all shown and how the title gets used and love in it's many forms is highlighted.  We don't get a lot of other characters in this one because really the story is about the main two and a few others who interact only do so to help them along and I loved that. This was about their journey and not so much about their growth as humans but how to love and be loved in return.  There is a strong familial relationship that is explored and the hypocrisy of wanting one thing for your sibling while being the thing you don't want to happen to them to others. I loved that the character called the brother out on this and I loved his reaction to being put on the spot.

It's a strong story and it made me love it and want to read all her works and I shed a few tears as well so yeah, I loved it and I highly recommend it.
