I had this one on my kindle for a while ( I looked it up I bought in 2012), yeah it took me 5 years to read it. I am however glad that I have read it now. I was just looking for a good contemporary and this one caught my eye, I re-downloaded it and got myself lost in Beverly's work.
I fell in love with the story, the premise and the town. I felt anxious reading the interspersed stories of the children and hoped that Bernadine would find them and be able to help them. I don't know about anyone else but if I had Bernadine's money I would be doing the same. The characters were fun, funny, witty, had amazing comebacks as only fierce women could. I loved that despite all the different naysayers Bernadine kept to her vision and pushed to make a change in not just the children's lives but those around her. I personally loved the moment she realized her vision had even more far reaching consequences than she could have ever imagined.
I loved the mix of history and family that this book has. Bernadine's vision of keeping a small town alive and viable because of who the founders were was amazing. I loved that she gave the towns people an option but she was going to do what was necessary whether liked it or not. It was fun to read as the small pieces came together to help make her vision come through. There were so many people ho needed to come home for it to work. And because they came home their lives were also changed and romances were given a second chance.
Bernadine was my kind of woman, comfortable in her skin and keeping her eye on her vision she still made time to seek the advise of those who would know better. She embraced life and made friends where she could. When threatened she came back fierce without ever breaking a sweat. I loved it. She made me feel so proud in that moment like she was a family friend and I enjoyed her getting her due. I loved her friends from back home and the club they set up. What a way to make something that should have been a negative into something powerful and empowering!!
I fumed with her when certain people in town showed their whole behinds and made themselves nuances. My gawd did I laugh about that man and his pig, because really??? I absolutely loved the lessons being learned, I was angry with the young lady who had her head so far up her behind but I also understood that as many children of addicts do she can't see the forest for the trees.
I absolutely loved this story and can't wait to go back to the town. I have since collected several of the books int he series and can't wait to dive back in. What I really enjoyed was realizing how she tied so many of her series together by making the town inhabitants the descendants of many of the historical romance books she wrote before. I live!!
