Month In Review: August 2018

Hello my loves

We are once again at the end of a month, and a season. Summer is heading out the door and we are in that weird time between late summer and early fall, where the days are blistering hot and the nights are a bit chilly. The change like this makes me want to read differently and because I tried to resist the urge to change my reading this month my reading suffered. Instead of hitting my reading mark and I lagged behind then decided to binge watch some Supernatural and that just ruined any chance of doing any serious reading so this month is a little less than normal.

I picked this one up because I had the pleasure of reading and loving the first book The Hookup. That was a phenomenal read for me and I needed to know all about the mess these two were going to create. And I wasn't disappointed, it was such a good read I picked it up late at night and didn't stop reading until I was done.

Told from the dual perspectives of Bella and Christian, we are introduced to what happens during the hookup, as this was taking place at the same time.  Bella is engaged to be married and it's the weeks leading up to her fairytale wedding when she finds herself with some information she didn't want to know.  A bit of a ditz, Bella is used to shaping her world to fit what she wants to happen and this isn't going to change, yet she has to decide what she's going to do, live with the unfolding story or move on. She's a woman who isn't used to making her own choices that would be deemed 'selfish' she's a people pleaser who is caught between her needs and what is expected & so this decision really throws her for a loop.

Christian is still trying to make up for the biggest mistake in his life. He regrets his choice but he can't hate the results because he got his son from it. He hurt his other half, his twin Cain and while he wishes he could change it, it's done and he's tired of being judged for it.  As part of a local family well known for the trouble their father always gets in he's trying to make changes for son, so that he can be proud of him.  Yet he can't seem to stay out of a certain brand of trouble. Bella is the worst kind, but he can't stay away.

Despite what everyone sees and thinks of them, these two have some serious baggage and depths to them. Even I kept judging them and had them confront those judgments as the story progresses was pretty wonderful. I loved that despite it all Bella still has faith in people and in love. She's way more practical than others believe and she can be flighty and afraid of facing any kind of confrontation, but when pushed she can and will meet the challenge.

I loved the journey these two went on. I loved reading as they developed a friendship somewhat and then when they crossed the lines into more. Bella was a weird mix of confident and shy and when she tried to change what she thought was wrong with her had me cracking up.  I loved that she called herself a prude and confronted that. I loved that Christian was such an amazing guy who helped her confront her fears and was very honest with her about he wanted; because he did that it allowed her to confront her own desires and needs.  It was pretty amazing to read. Holy moly their intimate scenes were just smoking hot, while also being sweet and funny because Christian made the moments fun for her as well.

I really enjoyed that for Bella she knew she was considered a throwback because she has always wanted to be a mother and yet she was comfortable with that.  When she decides to go after what she deserves it's amazing to read. I loved how she confronts her fiance and even how she handles Christian when he gets out of line.

My favorite moment came when she was in the pharmacy and faced a moment we have all dreaded when the pharmacist can't tone down the volume when telling you about the side effects of your meds. I laughed because been there and know the feeling. I loved what happened next especially because her sister is so upfront and funny while being real.

A fun and refreshing read. I flew through it and really loved when they had their real moments along with their funny moments.  I would really love more from the family and really would love their sisters' story. I recommend highly my loves.

I have managed to stay away from NetGalley but every once in a while I will get an invite I can't ignore and these were a few of them:

Brown, White, Black by Nishta J. Mehra. the small synopsis snagged my attention and I had to have it.

The next one is A Blade So Black by L. L. McKinney. I fell in love with the cover and when they described it in the email?? Yes, madam gimme that book.

I borrowed Black Hills by Nora Roberts from the library in ebook form. Really loved reading it that way. (I'm almost done)

I stopped by the Dollar Tree to snag items for my crafting and I found a few good books:

DIY Temporary Tattoos by Pepper Baldwin, because it looks pretty cool plus I love anything that talks about tattoos.  

then I was able to find Stitching Snow and Spinning Starlight by R.C. Lewis which have been on my wishlist since it came out and I didn't get it at my first BEA.  

I see this floating around on booktube all the time and it looks awesome so I snagged Hook's Revenge by Heidi Schultz I remember hearing about this at BEA but I never got a copy so when I saw it at the DT I grabbed a copy. If I like it I'll pass it on to my godson.

The Toltec Art of Life And Death by Miguel Ruiz. I grabbed this because my mom loved his other work and Oprah always recommends him so, why not grab it when it's only a dollar??

Lord of the Beasts by Susan Krinard. Susan was one of my faves when I was in high school, I'm collecting the ones I have read and rebuilding my library. 

Tell Me Something Good by Lynn Emery. I have a few of her books on my shelves and I have loved them so I figured I would get a few more by her.

This was one of my most anticipated books of the year and I'm so glad I got to read it. Oh my gosh this was good. I do wish that the mix of personal relationship building and the mystery of who and why they wanted to go after Journey was more equal, this focused more on Journey's relationship with Ivan and how that threw a wrench in other people's plans. I wanted a bit more about the family that surrounded her and how they got the way they did.

Having read the first book in the Brute force series I was ready for this, Dagger's edge picks up after the events of Collision Point, which focused on Ivan's daughter and her second chance at a life with her man. In Dagger's Edge we learn that Ivan's daughter was a setup for his father who is a brutal monster to control him, and when he couldn't he tried to betray his son in the worst way possible which forced Ivan into becoming an even bigger monster to protect his daughter and the innocents around him.  Journey's father is one of the men who have it out for Ivan, because they can't control him they too strike out at him, using Journey and Amara as pawns in their brutal game.

Realizing she will never be protected by those she calls family Journey runs away and tried to make it on her own.  There are forces bent on making sure she never gets away however and as she runs they hunt her as fiercely as Ivan's men are trying to protect her.  Even though Journey knows Ivan would be the best one to protect her she's afraid of him realizing who she is and so she runs from him too. 

I loved the back and forth between them, with Journey learning to stand up to him and yet defer when it comes to a life or death situation. While she's crafty and street smart enough to stay one step ahead she isn't ruthless enough to confront the men playing with her life and for this she needs Ivan.  Ivan has spent his whole life fighting and other than his daughter Amara no one has ever been solely in his corner because they needed him alone. Journey is becoming a weakness and yet also his reason to try for more for himself as well.

I absolutely enjoyed their intimate scene because my gawds did they burn up the sheets. I loved their interplay when talking and how Ivan tried to win arguments. Journey was learning so much about who she wanted to be and what she wanted from life even if she didn't think she would survive the coming battles, she wanted a small slice of happiness while she was here.   I loved his relationship with his friends and advisors and even with his daughter Amara. 

The action when there was some was fast paced and hooked you, it was like a well-played chess game, moves were being made that clearly lined events up and setup moves and people far beyond the small scene we were seeing. Getting snippets from the other players in the game certainly made you more invested in knowing what was happening because while it was happening off screen you knew it was going to impact Journey and Ivan as well.  I liked that Ivan was aware that his traditions were a  throwback, but understood why they were the way they were. I wanted for him to have the dream so bad and the two of them didn't hold back at all and reading that was awesome. 

The unraveling of empires, the moves Ivan and Journey made that put so many out of the game made me enjoy this one immensely. I can't wait to see who it is that brings down her former fiance. I want to see more about the crime families and how they could allow what was happening to their children to continue. I need to read the Elite Ops books that launched this and really get to know all the characters we're being introduced to because I'm sure it would make the stories even richer. 

As an aside I liked that Ivan clarified why his daughter and Journey are so close in age. I also liked that he was aware that the age difference does impact them somewhat. He knew her when she was a teen and wanted to help her find her way, not sexually (which I'm glad he stated) but he found her fascinating because she so clearly didn't want to be there (at whichever event her father forced her to attend) that he wanted to help make it less awkward for her. Him doing something so nice when he didn't have to led to her idolizing him, which I can totally understand.  This was the beginning of them, and even though reality shattered several of her dreams about Ivan, Ivan himself lived up to more than she expected. As for Ivan realizing this young woman had bloomed into a fun, smart, loving woman despite her family's attempt to destroy her, made him wish for more and become determined to fight for it.

Monday Movie #Review: To All The Boys I've Loved Before

I watched this movie with my sister as a girl's night treat, and we absolutely loved it.  We had a ball freezing the movie and laughing our butts off at certain moments, discussing how we would handle others and genuinely having a blast.  I truly believe that this would have made a good box office movie. Its romantic, funny, talk about things going on now with teens and at the same time harkens back to the John Hughes era of Sixteen Candles and the like.  

For the romantic at heart, it pulled on several tropes that I loved and made them fun again. While it's true I haven't read the series of books that inspired the movie I am now adding it on because it was a fun movie. Lara Jean like most young women dreams of a love that will find her and see her, yet she does nothing to aide that love to come into being. I absolutely loved the relationships she had with her family, her sisters, in particular, were so much fun and hilarious especially Kitty.   

When someone mails out a few letters she wrote to her crushes at the height of those crushes it ripples across her life as they come to confront her. From there the hijinks really ensue and so does the trope of the fake relationship.  I loved Lara Jean as a character she was wonderfully acted. I really enjoyed how she made the situation awkward and yet fun.  

Of course, no teen romantic movie would be complete without a nemesis to conquer, fears to face and roadblocks that trip the two lovebirds up. In the end family comes to the rescue and makes this a romantic movie with feel good moments that will warm even the most unromantic viewer.

It's the final book in the series and I needed it in my life, I couldn't wait for delivery because for whatever reason it wasn't up for pre-order and didn't appear on amazon until release day so I bought the ebook and physical copy as well.

Same reason except this is a new series launched from the Off-Campus series and I can't wait to go back into the university and read all the new stories we'll be getting. 

The Duke by Default by Alyssa Cole 

Book two in her newest series and I also couldn't wait until I could get a physical copy.

Fatal Attraction: Aphrodite's Tale (The Goddesses) I read and loved the first two books in this series and realized after that they came out with another. Snagged this as a trade and it came brand new so excited!! 

Feather In The Wind by Madeline Baker, read this years ago, thought I had a copy but when I inventoried the other day it wasn't there, grabbed a copy and it came in pretty decent condition.

Power Game by Christine Feehan, another in the series that I own, and am working on reading

because I'm collecting her entire catalog I traded for a copy of A Date With the Other Side by Erin McCarthy

 I finished out my collection of Jay Crownover's Point series by getting a physical copy of Dignity, last year when it came out I bought the ebook because it would be faster (same as this year)

I've been trying to be good but I swung by the Dollar Tree and found a few goodies including:

Nantucket Red ( Nantucket Summer Book 2) by Leila Howland Didn't realize it was the second book until I was home.  

The Crimson Crown by Cinda Williams Chima.  Everyone raves about this one on booktube so I thought I would snag it for a dollar then find the others later.

I also snagged Rogue Wave by Jennifer Donnely, which is great because I'm trying to read the first int he series this week 

Because I own a few random books in the series I decided to grab the first book so I can get started on them. I grabbed The Fight (Drama High Book 1) by L. Divine.
